The predecessor of the School of Mathematical Science is the Mathematics Teaching and Research Office of the PLA Military Engineering Institute, founded in 1953. Professor LU Qingjun, a famous mathematician, mathematics educator and expert in rocket and space technology, served as the director of the Teaching and Research Office. The Teaching and Research Office has successively produced a group of well-known experts and scholars, such as DAI Yishan, WANG Hao, ZHANG Jinhuai, and cultivated many internationally renowned scholars, such as LIN Zongzhu and GUAN Bo, and so on. The discipline of mathematics has a long history of graduate training and is an important base for the country to cultivate high-level mathematical talents. At present, the mathematics discipline has been approved to award the first-class doctor's degree and master's degree. It has the Key Laboratory of Marine Science and Engineering Mathematics Technology of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Key Laboratory of Engineering Applied Mathematics of Heilongjiang Province.
The mathematics discipline of Harbin Engineering University has established a high-level teaching staff with rich experience in talent training and has made important contributions to basic theory and applied research. Basic research represented by algebra and differential theory of equations and applied research represented by fluid computing and biological mathematics have formed the characteristic research direction of the discipline. The mathematics discipline also relies on the university’s "Three Seas and One Ocean" (shipbuilding industry, marine equipment, ocean exploration, and nuclear energy application) characteristic discipline for extensive and in-depth research cooperation, and some research cooperation projects have formed products for application in related industries. The discipline emphasizes the internationalization of its teaching staff, with over 50% of the total number of teachers having at least one-year overseas study or work experience. It has established stable communication and cooperation relationships with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and other countries, and encourages graduate students to engage in academic exchanges during their studies.
In the future, mathematics discipline will always focus on the forefront of discipline development and application needs, carry out scientific research, and gradually develop into a well-known talent training and scientific research base with distinctive characteristics in the field of mathematics.
