To advance the university’s innovative “College + Academy” dual-track undergraduate training model, the Department of Public Mathematics at the School of Mathematical Sciences recently launched the "Academic Support in Colleges: Mathematics Study Seminars" initiative. This program encourages faculty and graduate students in mathematics to engage regularly with the colleges, offering volunteer services such as math tutoring, Q&A sessions and academic planning for undergraduates. The initiative aims to seamlessly integrate the “first classroom” (formal education) with the “second classroom” (informal learning), fostering the development of top-tier innovative talent.

On the afternoon of April 3rd, Chai Yanyou, Director of the Department of Public Mathematics and Jia Niannian, a provincial teaching expert and leader of the Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics course, led two graduate students to the multifunctional activity room at Zhixue College. Together, they provided academic support and Q&A sessions to over 30 undergraduate students, focusing on the courses “Engineering Mathematics Analysis II”and “Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics”.

The session featured both one-on-one and small-group discussions, enabling face-to-face interactions to address specific challenges and concerns of the students in their coursework. Tailored guidance was provided to help students strengthen their understanding in weaker areas. Chai and Jia also took time to discuss study habits, academic progress and overall well-being, offering words of encouragement to inspire them to overcome challenges and keep moving forward with determination.
