About us

The predecessor of the School of Mathematical Sciences is the Mathematics Teaching and Research Office of the PLA Military Engineering Institute, founded in 1953. Professor LU Qingjun, a famous researcher and educator of mathematics and expert in rocket and space technology, served as the director of the Teaching and Research Office. The Teaching and Research Office successively produced a group of well-known experts and scholars, such as DAI Yishan, WANG Hao, ZHANG Jinhuai, and cultivated many internationally renowned scholars, including LIN Zongzhu , GUAN Bo etc. The Teaching and Research Office successively evolved into the Department of Basic Sciences and the Department of Mathematics and Physics. In 1999, the Mathematics Teaching and Research Office merged with the Physics Department to form the School of Science, and in 2019, the School of Mathematical Sciences was established.

The Department of Basic Sciences first recruited undergraduate students majoring in mathematics in 1977. At present, the school has a nationally ranked undergraduate program in mathematics and applied mathematics, the first-level PhD. program in mathematics which covers four secondary disciplines: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, and Operations and Control. The school has scientific research platforms such as the Key Laboratory of Marine Sciences and Engineering Mathematics Technology of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Key Laboratory of Engineering Applied Mathematics of Heilongjiang Province. In addition, the Applied Mathematics Center of Heilongjiang Province was jointly established by the School of Mathematical Sciences and Harbin Institute of Technology.

The School has 97 faculty members, including 81 full-time research and teaching faculty, 17 professors, 42 associate professors, 16 doctoral supervisors, 53 master supervisors and 5 foreign faculty. At present, the School has 5 provincial and ministerial talents, 3 provincial master teachers, 1 provincial master teacher of ideological and political education, 1 provincial young master teacher, 2 teachers selected for the provincial support program for promising academic youth, and 1 highly esteemed college counselor in Heilongjiang Province. Currently, There are  329 undergraduate students, 205 master students and 97 doctoral students enrolled in the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Adhering to the principle of "cultivating talents for the Communist Party and the country", the school fully implements the basic task of nurturing moral values and emphasizes the characteristics of cultivating talents with broad vision, solid foundation, substantial and excellent quality, and innovation. The school is committed to cultivating inter-disciplinary talents with considerable scientific quality, rigorous academic attitude and innovative aptitude, who have an excellent grasp of basic theories, specialized knowledge in mathematics, and can apply what they have learned to solve practical problems. In recent years, with the country's emphasis on research and mathematical applications, the employment rate of students has steadily  remained above 90%.

The School has always been committed to a rigorous teaching style with fruitful teaching achievements. There are four national first-class undergraduate courses, namely "Walking into Mathematics", "Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics", "Functional of a Complex Variable", and "Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry". The teachers have won two first prizes in the national finals of the "National Mathematics Micro-course Teaching Design Contest" and one second prize in the "National Demonstration and Exchange" of the first national mathematics course teaching innovation demonstration and exchange activity. Over the past five years, the faculty members led the students to win more than 2000 provincial and above provincial awards in various international and domestic mathematical discipline contests including University Student Mathematical Modeling Contests, University Student Mathematical Contests and S.-T. Yau University Student Mathematics Contest and other mathematical contests.
Following the discipline development rule of "science-oriented and science-industry integrated", the school has gradually formed the main discipline directions of “Algebra and Combinatorics”, “Differential Equations”, “Intelligent Data Analysis”, “Complex Network and Dynamic System”, “Marine Computational Mathematics”. In the past five years, the School has won 30 National Natural Science Foundation project grants, 1 Outstanding Youth Fund of Heilongjiang Province and 3 Provincial Excellent Youth Projects. The school has also carried out more than 20 other national and provincial projects, and nearly 20 science and technology integration projects, and won 5 provincial and ministerial awards and industry science and technology awards. The School also adheres to the principle of promoting both the foundation and application. In recent years, academic papers by faculty members of the School have been published in renowned journals such as Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society, Communications in Mathematical Physics, Advances in Mathematics, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, and Journal of Functional Analysis.
