070101   Mathematics and Applied Mathematics

Training Objectives: Provide an all-rounded development in ethics, intellect and physical fitness, mastering fundamental theories and methods in mathematics and science, while developing strong analytical and deductive reasoning skills. Graduates will possess the ability to apply mathematical knowledge and use computers to assist in solving practical problems, trained as advanced specialists in scientific research. The graduates will stay informed of all recent advancements in mathematics, equipped with a global vision and collaborative skills, capable of engaging in research and teaching in areas such as technology, education, economics, finance and applying their expertise in production, operations and management, with the option to pursue further graduate studies..

The major includes the following five requirements:

(1) Be passionate about socialism and support the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Possess strong personal qualities, a correct worldview and high moral standards. Have a strong sense of humanitarian concern and social service awareness and be able to play an active role in mathematics and related fields.

(2) Possess a solid and broad mathematical foundation, mastering the fundamental theories and methods of applied mathematics, enable them to utilize  knowledge alongside engineering techniques to analyze and solve practical problems in society.

(3) Possess a comprehensive understanding of natural sciences, the fundamentals of engineering and mathematics, along with strong analytical and deductive reasoning, scientific thinking and innovative skills, enable students to fully adapt to the subsequent postgraduate study and research.

(4) Possess the qualifications for research and teaching in technology, education, industry and finance, as well as for practical applications and management in production and operations. Be capable of expanding knowledge through lifelong learning, and able to adapt to various fields and meet the demands of societal development and advancements in modern science and technology.

5) Possess a broad international vision, stay abreast of global advancements in mathematics and related fields, demonstrate international competitiveness, collaboration skills, effectively communicating and managing diverse roles within a team.

Graduation requirements: Graduates should meet the following requirements in terms of knowledge, skills, and competencies:

(1)Expertise: Solid mathematical foundation, strong mathematical communication skills and mastery of scientific mathematical methodologies.

(2)Analysis: Apply fundamental mathematical principles to establish models for engineering issues and utilize theories and methods to derive reasonable and effective conclusions.

(3)Research: Possess strong analytical and deductive reasoning, scientific computing and comprehensive innovation ability, be capable of investigating issues based on scientific principles and employing mathematical theories and methods to derive reasonable and effective conclusions.

(4)Use of modern tools: master the basic methods of data query, literature review and use of modern information technology to obtain relevant information, and be able to use appropriate technologies, resources, modern mathematical tools and information technology tools.

(5)Mathematics and Society: Gain a comprehensive understanding of various disciplines, explore the historical context and broad applications of mathematics, examine contemporary developments and future prospects, assess the impact of mathematical advancements on society and culture, and recognize the responsibilities involved.

(6)Environmental and sustainable development: Be able to understand and assess the impact of engineering practices in mathematics and related fields on environmental and social sustainability.

(7)Professional standards: Understand China's national conditions, possess social science literacy and a sense of social responsibility, and be able to understand and abide by professional ethics and norms, demonstrate accountability, contribute to the nation and serve society.

(8)Individuals and teams: Be capable of taking on roles as individuals, team members or leaders within multidisciplinary teams.

(9)Communication: Be able to effectively engage with industry peers and the public on mathematical issues, including report writing and presentations, with a global perspective and cross-cultural communication skills.

(10)Project Management: Understand and apply management principles and economic decision-making methods related to mathematical projects in a multidisciplinary environment.

(11)Lifelong Learning: Cultivate self-directed and lifelong learning awareness, with the ability to continuously learn and adapt to developments in the mathematics profession.

Graduation credit requirements: Students in this major must complete 161 credits, including 134 credits of required courses, 15 credits of major electives, and 12 credits of general education electives.
