On September 2nd, the School of Mathematics hosted a math science popularization report by Zelmanov, winner of the Fields Prize. Over 250 students, including all 2023 graduate students, some undergraduate and doctoral students, as well as teachers, were invited to attend. Fan Zhaobing, the Dean of the School of Mathematics, served as the event’s host.
Zelmanov delivered a report titled “Modern Mathematics,” wherein he discussed the potential of mathematical applications in artificial intelligence. He focused on two main areas of mathematical development in artificial intelligence, namely big data and machine learning. The speaker illustrated the development and application of mathematics in artificial intelligence through classic examples. Additionally, Zelmanov emphasized the significance of “proof” in mathematics and highlighted its rigor to the students.
After the presentation, Zelmanov engaged in a lively discussion with the attending teachers and students regarding academic matters.
Aside from highlighting the exceptional performance of mathematics in emerging development trends like artificial intelligence and deep learning, Professor Zelmanov’s report extensively delves into the aesthetic aspects of mathematics. He encourages us to perceive mathematics not only as a field of study but also as an art form, urging us to develop a keen appreciation for its beauty. Such cultivation of “good taste” enables us to seamlessly integrate the advancement of fundamental theories with their practical applications in various domains.
“Professor Zelmanov’s report left a profound impact on me. Through his sharing, I truly grasped the elegance of mathematics, igniting my passion and aspiration towards this subject. It motivated me to strive for excellence and actively contribute to the progress of the field. I am determined to persist in my studies, dedicating myself to unraveling the countless mysteries that mathematics holds”, an audience said.
This event is a significant academic gathering organized by the School of Mathematics to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its establishment. It has successfully kindled the students’ enthusiasm for mathematical research within the school and has also provided them with valuable guidance for their future involvement in this field.
