In July of 2024, the School of Mathematical Sciences organized a nine-day summer study tour to the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore. Led by Associate Professor Haitao Ma, ten undergraduate students participated in this enriching experience, which aimed to enhance their academic and cultural understanding through exposure to cutting-edge quantum computing research.
1. Academic Lectures:
Students attended a series of lectures on topics such as “Quantum Information” and “Quantum Computing”. Professor Haitao Ma presented Harbin Engineering University's quantum research advancements to the A*STAR team. In return, A*STAR researchers introduced Singapore’s national quantum strategy and shared their latest research findings. The lectures provided students with valuable insights into the transformative potential of quantum technologies.
2. University Visits:
The group toured leading institutions, including the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National Quantum Computing Centre. Students interacted with local students and researchers, comparing educational and cultural experiences. These visits expanded their horizons and offered inspiration for future academic endeavors.
3. Cultural Exchange:
The tour also included cultural activities, such as exploring iconic landmarks and engaging with local residents in Chinatown. Students reflected on the profound influence of Chinese traditional culture on Singapore’s multicultural identity, strengthening their understanding of cultural heritage and its significance in global contexts.
