On November 1, the School of Mathematical Sciences had the honor of hosting Vyacheslav Futorny, a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and Distinguished Professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology, as part of the prestigious “Yishan Forum.” The forum was attended by over 70 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students and was chaired by Dean Fan Zhaobing.
Vyacheslav Futorny’s lecture, titled “Invitation to Representation Theory”, provided an engaging introduction to the field, tracing its historical development, foundational problems and groundbreaking results. He emphasized the significance of Lie algebras in representation theory and illustrated their applications with classical theorems. The lecture, while intellectually rigorous, was delivered in an accessible and inspiring manner, sparking lively discussions among the audience.
In a candid Q&A session, Futorny encouraged students to embrace a step-by-step approach in their academic pursuits, highlighting the importance of persistence and incremental progress in tackling complex mathematical problems. Students described the session as both enlightening and motivational.
Haiyan Liu, a first-year master’s student, reflected, “professor Futorny’s lecture deepened my understanding of representation theory and inspired me to approach mathematical research with renewed enthusiasm.” Similarly, Peng Li, an undergraduate, remarked, “interacting with such an expert academic was an incredible experience. It reignited my passion for mathematics and showed me the joy of uncovering solutions to challenging problems.”
This session not only enriched students’academic perspectives but also reaffirmed the school’s commitment to hosting world-class scholars as part of its efforts to cultivate a vibrant intellectual community.
